Leicester is now ideally poised to take advantage of the momentum that the Midlands Engine has created and is becoming a key area for business. Andrew Smith, Director – Planning, Transport & Economic Development at Leicester City Council will provide an overview of the Council’s strategy and update us the on current development activity and plans. Helen Donnellan, the Head of Inward Investment, will also highlight the target areas of growth and explain how her team is attracting investment into Leicester. Brita Sread is the new Director of Estates & Campus Services at The University of Leicester who will provide an update on where the University is up to with their development programme and how they are attracting and retaining talent. She joined the council in January 2014, and is directly responsible for promoting the city to potential investors looking to relocate from outside Leicester, and for helping existing businesses in Leicester who are looking to expand. Helen previously worked in Cambridgeshire where she was responsible for Inward Investment for the area’s Local Enterprise Partnership and its Enterprise Zone – Alconbury Enterprise Campus, a 150 hectare site. Helen has a background in marketing and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. Before joining the public sector, Helen worked for Dow Jones as Head of Marketing and Communications across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Chris Miller, Director of Development; Midland Heart Chris is a member of the Chartered Institute of Housing and has worked in the Affordable Housing sector for 30 years, starting his career at Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council in the housing team before a conscious move to a Midlands based Housing Association to pursue his ambition of being involved in housing development. He has spent the last 20 years developing thousands of new affordable homes, working on major regeneration projects in the Birmingham area and 10 years heading up a development and sales team in London for Viridian Housing, where he was involved in some of the Capital’s landmark projects including Battersea Nine Elms and the Royal Arsenal Riverside in Greenwich. He has recently returned to working in the Midlands as Director of Development at Midland Heart, a large regional based Housing Association managing some 33,000 homes. Chris is also the Vice Chair of St.Basils, a small Birmingham based Housing Association that houses and supports young homeless people between the ages of 16 and 25. Brita Sread, Director of Estates & Campus Services, University of Leicester Brita leads the newly formed Division of Estates and Campus Services on the redevelopment of on-campus facilities and the University’s plan to develop Space Park Leicester at Abbey Fields. Brita is a highly accomplished senior property professional with over 25 years of experience gained in a diverse range of sectors including charities, corporate real estate and public sector owner occupiers. Brita joins the University of Leicester from BUPA where she was Property Director and prior to this role held senior positions with Rolls-Royce as Director of Strategy and Planning and with the Metropolitan Police. Mark Garrity, Senior Development Manager; Kier Property Mark started his career in private practice at Gooch Webster in London before transferring to Birmingham, where he also worked for King Sturge and LSH in retail agency. Mark made the move into the out of town retail and trade and industrial sectors to work as a UK wide acquisition manager for Travis Perkins for 8 years.
