Ian Caldwell; Director of Estates King’s College LondonIan-Caldwell-Cropped-213x293

Ian is a chartered architect, graduating from Strathclyde University in 1977. His early career included experience in private practice, local and central government where he was responsible for projects in the Royal Palaces, the Ministry of Defence, the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery in London, the National Galleries of Scotland and the Supreme Courts of Scotland. In 1989 Ian joined Deloitte’s, and later became the Director of Estates at Sheffield Hallam University, Imperial College and then King’s College London. At King’s, Ian is responsible for estates management, facilities management and maintenance as well as development of the estate and project management. Acting for the College, Ian is a director of the South Bank Employer’s Group, a director of the Strand, Trafalgar Square and Aldwych Association and a founder member of the Chancery Lane Association.  He is also chairman of the Higher Education Quality Design Forum. Ian is also Chairman of the Higher Education Design Quality Forum.


Andrew Grainger; Director of Estates University College London

Andrew_Grainger_07Andrew has led UCL Estates since June 2009. The UCL estate in the heart of London comprises around 200 buildings, nearly 5 million square feet with a value over £2 billion. UCL Estates manages the all the university estate and facilities infrastructure from establishing the strategy to running the operation, both academic and residential. A strategic Estate Masterplan was published in 2011 setting out plans for major investment in improving UCL’s Bloomsbury estate, now in progress, and signalling ambitions for estate growth beyond Bloomsbury.

Prior to UCL, Andrew was Property Director of British Airways PLC and earlier in his earlier career worked on the regeneration of London Docklands for LDDC. Andrew is a Chartered Surveyor, married with 3 children, enjoys travel, cycling, skiing and diving. He is passionate about Africa and the international development agenda and is Chair of the Trustees of Street Action, a small NGO working with African Street Child projects.


Julian Robinson – Director of Estates London School of Economics Julian_Robinson

Julian is Director of Estates at the London School of Economics, responsible for the delivery of all capital development and facilities and property management at the School. He was formerly Project Director at Queen Mary University of London. Projects delivered include a new medical school and students’ village at Queen Mary and the New Academic Building at the LSE.

Holding post graduate qualifications in Town Planning and Surveying, most of his working life has been spent as a client side project manager responsible for the briefing, design and procurement of capital projects. He was a CABE Enabler, is Deputy Chair of the Higher Education Design Quality Forum (HEDQF) and Chair of Governors at an east London primary school.

He speaks regularly at conferences and events on subjects ranging from environmental sustainability, buildings and architecture and facilities management.


Stephen Wells – Director of Estates & Facilities Queen Mary, University of LondonStephen Wells

Stephen Wells is currently the Director of Estates and Facilities at Queen Mary, University of London.  Queen Mary, is one of the UK’s leading research-focused higher education institutions. With around 17,840 students, 4,000 staff and an annual turnover of £300m, Queen Mary is one of the biggest University of London colleges.  Based in a creative and culturally diverse area of east London, we are the only London university able to offer a completely integrated residential campus, with a 2,000-bed award-winning student village at our Mile End home.

Stephen is a member of the Chartered Institute of Building with a B.Sc. (hons) in project management for construction and an MBA, prior to Queen Mary, Stephen was the Director of Estates and Facilities at London South Bank University.  Prior to this he was in the acute NHS sector for 17 years in similar roles in London and the South Coast.
