Nuclear Development – Future Projects & Market Update

Monday, 14th June 2021 1345hrs – 1530hrs

Nuclear power has increasing importance to the country’s power supply needs. With ever increasing energy demands and the UK Government setting the UK’s net zero target for 2050 we will be discussing how this sector can help power the UK’s future as well as its potential to help the UK meet its sustainability and zero carbon targets.

In this event we will hear from the UK’s most prominent Nuclear Power stations about enabling innovation across nuclear technologies, alongside discussion about the business model development, and moving forwards with new-build station development from some of the leading figures and most influential names in the sector.

Speakers for this event include:

Paul Methven,
STEP Director
Dr Fiona Rayment,
Chief Science & Technology Officer
Dr Andrew Forrest,
Chief Technical Officer

  • UK Atomic Energy Authority – Paul will talk about the bid to bring the first nuclear fusion power plant in the world to the West of England, potentially creating thousands of jobs in the region. Some £220m of government money is going into a national selection process to find an appropriate site for the prototype fusion plant, which potentially could be operational by 2040. Organisers of bid have said that if successful the project has the potential to secure billions of pounds of investment into the region, with much of the supporting business ‘eco-system’ of the proposed plant being developed over the next two to 10 years. Paul will discuss this scheme as well as the other work the UK Atomic Energy Authority are undertaking.
  • Magnox – Andrew Forrest has more than 20 years’ experience from a range of leadership roles in both Customer and Supply Chain organisations in the Nuclear and Petrochemical industry. He has held roles at BNFL/Sellafield Ltd, Ineos, Bilfinger and most recently Wood, where he was the Engineering and Technical Director for the Nuclear Business. As Technical Director at Magnox, Andrew will provide technical direction for the development, design, and systems integration from definition phase through to the implementation of Magnox’s future projects.
  • National Nuclear Laboratory – As Chief Science & Technology Officer at the NNL, Fiona will be able to share insight into the direction that the nuclear sector is heading, as well as ideas around improving utilisation and the future for the industry. We will also hear about the NNL’s thoughts on  why big plants like Sizewell C and Hinkley C are important, as well as the potential role for small modular reactor technology.
