The Space Sector & the Built Environment Conference

Thursday, 16th July 2020 0900hrs – 1245hrs

This half-day virtual conference will focus on the thriving space industry and the impact this is having on the built environment and the construction industry.

Both Government and the private sector are investing heavily into the UK’s space sector at present – and this is creating a new frontier for the built environment industry to enter.

Funding and investment are creating space focused employment clusters and large scale employment hubs – with the UK now needing to build new capabilities and skills to support growth in the globally competitive commercial space market.

We’ll be joined by those at the forefront of this industry and look at the future opportunities and challenges.

This event will run in a similar manner to all of our physical events – with short presentations from several key speakers and opportunities for live Q&A and interaction.

To date the UK have not launched our own spacecraft into orbit, we have relied on other countries’ rockets to do so! This is set to change by 2022 with multiple launch sites or spaceports under development and applying for licenses from the government. In this session UKLS will summarise 3 challenges the industry are working to overcome for LaunchUK and our first spaceports: What is technically required to launch a rocket and its spacecraft payload into orbit – and why is it a particular challenge to do this from the UK? How are the safety issues and potential hazards associated with a rocket launch being addressed by our future spaceports and their rocket launch service providers? What  environmental impacts may need to be mitigated, to ensure commercial success of our spaceports?” Dr Adam Baker shares his insights.
