Conference Overview

The Higher Education sector is as busy as it has ever been with more students undertaking degree courses than ever before and the UK undoubtedly being world leaders at attracting the best students. All this obviously comes from having the right curriculum and great teaching staff but it’s also to do with a first class campus and a well utilised estate and offices. For the Universities that continue to lead they have expansion and modernisation very much at the top of their agenda which is good news for the property and construction sector.

For our Yorkshire Universities event we have brought together some of  the sectors leading players to share with us their plans and to engage with you about procurement opportunities.

We’ll be joined by:

  • Colin Blair; Director of Estates and Facilities at the University of Huddersfield
  • Laura Hallett; Head of Strategic Projects & Change, Innovation & Growth
  • Dennis Hopper; Director of Facilities Management at the University of Leeds
  • Dr Peter O’Brien; Associate at Yorkshire Universities

Leeds University have a large variety of projects which are yet to begin as part of a huge £520m masterplan – and they’re still looking for development partners, contractors and more, and there is likely to be a lot of procurement opportunities in the future.

The University of Huddersfield is another University that is thriving at the moment with the Barbara Hepworth Building (a new £30m project) is currently ongoing – and they have a 15-year strategy to redevelop a previously derelict site. The Barbara Hepworth building will cover just 20% of the 20,000sq m site, leaving the rest open to be developed over the next 12-15 years.

Laura Hallett of York St John University is leading strategic projects at the higher education institution, and she is responsible for the delivery of major projects aligned to the University strategy. The role involves securing appropriate funding and resources for projects and change initiatives through identifying external funding opportunities to support such change, development and growth.
