Design images have been revealed for an impressive multi-million pound revamp of Halifax train station. The plans, by Calderdale Council, will see the town centre transformed – including an ambitious new look for the town’s railway station.

The Council, who will speak at our Transforming West Yorkshire Conference in Leeds this June, are now displaying the plans to the public as they look to gain feedback and thoughts from local residents and business owners.

The revamped railway station forms part of a wider project – being led by Leeds City Region’s £1bn West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund. It’ll involve major changes including pedestrianisation of the station, whilst also including massive changes to the town’s gateways from both the east and the west in a bid to speed up traffic flow and ease congestion – which in turn will enable easier access to the town centre by foot.

Councillor Barry Collins, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economy and speaker at our Transforming West Yorkshire Conference, said: ”The display gives visitors the opportunity to see the designs in print and find out more about our wider aspirations for Halifax Town Centre. Halifax Railway Station is a key gateway not only for Calderdale but for the North of England. It’s an entry point into our thriving town and close to major employers, as well as visitor destinations like Eureka and the iconic Piece Hall. Around two million people use the station every year, and we have an ambitious target to see 50% more rail trips in 2026 than in 2016.”

He added: ”Improving the station and the way people access it would help meet future demand. It would also improve the travel experience, create a more attractive environment and boost the local economy by increasing investment, jobs and tourism. Feedback forms are available at the Library and we welcome people’s thoughts on the initial designs, prior to a formal engagement event taking place next year.”

The scheme is part of Calderdale’s Next Chapter scheme – which focuses on transport and infrastructure, public realms and space, and local businesses.
