HS2, the transformational infrastructure project which is set to drive economic growth across the UK, is already supporting 9,000 jobs across the UK – new government figures have revealed.

The project to build a high-speed rail network to connect UK cities and in turn improve regional connectivity has now begun with spades in the ground on the work across the UK. • 9,000 jobs are now supported by HS2
  • 2,000 different companies are working on the project
  • 70% of those companies are SMEs
  • 98% of those companies are British
  • 324 apprenticeships within HS2 and the supply chain

The project is much more than a train line – it’s set to bring major regeneration and development to cities and surrounding regions and the huge regeneration and development projects will be the focus of the Official HS2 Economic Growth Conference set to take place in Leeds this September. When the project is in full flow HS2 are expecting the scheme to support more than 30,000 on the development of the line itself – with many more jobs created through the delivery of new offices, employment zones and from the need to accelerate the delivery of housing across the UK, all growth which HS2 will bring.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: “Today’s announcement shows HS2 is happening and is yet another example of how this government is making sure Britain works for everyone, delivering jobs and growth across the country.”

Mark Thurston, Chief Executive of HS2 Ltd, added: “HS2 is more than a railway, it’s also an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for the country. The jobs and skills that we will create in every corner of the country will give us an industry to be proud of, and one that we can export to other countries. As work gathers pace on the project, the jobs and opportunities for British businesses to get involved mean the benefits are here and now. Britain once led the world in railway engineering, and it can once again be at its forefront through HS2.”
