The City of Leeds is set to double in size with huge developments plans – with key stakeholders set to discuss further details at the Transforming Leeds Conference next month.

Plans are set to see a huge housing boost with the development of over 16,500 new homes, and massive developments around the HS2 Train Station, South Bank and more.

The South Bank area is set to see 8,000 new homes created, which will be built to create a community feel and transform the area to make it more inclusive to those within the outskirts of the city. The development, which is being led by Vastint, could create more than 35,000 new jobs and see the size and economic output of the city centre double.

Further news was has been shared around CEG’s plans to build a residential building that will be ‘Yorkshire’s tallest’ which will house 750 new homes, along with a variety of mixed-use developments including office employment space, shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Jon Kenny, Development Director at CEG said: ‘‘This is a derelict site where we can deliver a vibrant mixed-use strategic development of a critical mass and international quality that can enable this regeneration area to become a true gateway into the city, reconnecting local communities,’ explained Jon Kenny, development director at CEG.”

Adding to the wave of development, Caddick Group will also be building. They’ll be creating up to 700 new homes, office and leisure space in the city’s cultural centre.

Focus will be given to environmental sustainability as the council recommends Scandinavian inspired design standard to deliver long-term environmental benefits for residents and the city. This will include the ground-breaking development to install, via Vital Energi, a district heating network, which will provide a sustainable source of heating and hot water for local households and businesses through a network of underground pipes. It’s estimated the installation could save residents around 10% annually through more efficient and controlled heating.

Councillor Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council, said of the developments: ”It’s an exciting time for residential development in Leeds as we progress with more than 40 diverse residential projects, with 60 sites identified for future growth – as we target the delivery of 16,500 new homes across the city.”

We look forward to hearing more about how the city is set to become transformed at the Transforming Leeds Conference on the 19th April where we’ll hear from Leeds City Council, Historic England, The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, HS2 Growth Partnership and Transport for the North.
