Redcar & Cleveland Council have revealed plans to transform the region with 99 exciting projects including a brand new cinema, an adventure centre, transformation of the high street and the regeneration of Redcar station.

The plans are set to be a huge focus of the Tees Valley Development Plans Conference to be held in Middlesbrough with Redcar & Cleveland Council amongst the speakers.

The Borough has come up with a raft of plans for three key areas after a public consultation period with residents and business, and these were Redcar, East Cleveland and Greater Eston. In total there are 99 schemes being considered which, if they were all completed, could create 1,600 new jobs in a £150m investment by the Council along with £262m needed from investors and developers to make the projects a reality. The plans also lay out the opportunity for more than 2,000 new homes to be built by 2022 in a boost for regional housing numbers.

Some of the schemes include:

  • A big revamp of Redcar station
  • A family adventure centre on Redcar seafront
  • A five-screen cinema on the old Redcar Bowl site
  • New café and restaurants on Saltburn seafront

The Council confirmed that they’re committing £8m towards the plans for Redcar town centre, along with an addition £2.8m for industrial parks in Greater Eston. Funding has also been secured from the SSI Task Force with £5m set to fund Redcar town centre, with additional investment coming from the National Lottery, Government and the private sector.

Councillor Sue Jeffrey, Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Council who’ll be speaking at the Tees Valley Development Plans Conference, said: ”Some of the plans are aspirational and they’re hugely exciting. For the first time today, we are setting out the full set of projects that we are currently working on and show how together, they create the momentum for further projects and more investment right across the borough. This approach means that there is a continuous pipeline of projects at various stages of development, all targeted at growing the economy and creating new jobs and opportunities for all. Community led projects are at the centre of these plans and I am convinced our investment will be more sustainable if we take the lead from our communities and work alongside them to deliver.”

Councillor Bob Norton, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth added: ”Many of our schemes are fully costed and others are visionary, but they all have the potential to make a real, long-term effect for our people and our economy. For each area, the schemes are divided into three categories which are fully funded, part funded and no funding secured or to be delivered by others.”
