Commonwealth Games Development Sandwell Project

A planning application has officially been submitted for an ambitious state-of-the-art swimming centre in the West Midlands. The £60m Sandwell Aquatics Centre is set to be a central point of the Commonwealth Games – which arrives in Birmingham in 2022. The Games is set to see major development across Sporting Venues in the Midlands – which will be a key focus of the Midlands Development Plans Conference in March.

The initial plans include a world-class Olympic-sized 50m competition swimming pool, a 25m diving pool and 1,000 permanent spectator seats. During the period of the games the capacity will increase to a total of 4,000 to help create an electric atmosphere into the Smethwick Centre.

The project will also include additional development including:

  • Dry-dive facility
  • 108-station gym
  • Separate ladies only gym
  • 3 fitness studios
  • 8-courts sports hall
  • Cycling studio
  • Cafe
  • 450 car parking spaces
  • Football facilities
  • Urban park
  • Children’s play area

Cllr Bill Gavan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who took part in the consultation and provided us with valuable feedback that will help us improve the designs and facility mix of the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick. The feedback has been used in our planning to ensure the centre will meet the needs of Sandwell residents for generations to come. The application will now be considered by local planning authority over the next few months.”
