The All-Party Parliamentary Group on General Aviation promotes the objective of making the United Kingdom the best country in the world for General Aviation, and to stimulate interest in the sector. 12:40-13:00 Breakout Session – Teesside Airport’s Transformative Development Plans

In this session we will hear about Teesside Airport’s transformative plans to boost the local economy with opportunities for more than £200m of inward investment and the creation of 4,400 jobs. Their development which will be built on the 270-acres of land on the southside of the airport, will see 3.4 million square feet of logistics, manufacturing and commercial space being developed. We’ll find out more from an extended presentation followed by Q&A.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport – Liz Askam, Property Manager

£1.6bn of construction investment planned as part of their ambitious masterplan which includes 1.5m sq ft of airside development, 3m sq ft of logistics and advanced manufacturing space, 3,000 new homes and retail, hotel and leisure complexes. Liz will give us insight into the masterplan, the £10 million expansion announced at the end of January 2020 and future development plans at the airport.

 

Teesside International Airport – Phil Forster, Managing Director

Teesside International Airport have big plans to boost the local economy with their development plans. They plan to invest £200 million in an airport business park, expected to create up to 4,400 jobs over 1.9million sq. ft area. Recently announcing £25 million investment in Teesside International Airport that has the potential to bring 250 to 300 jobs to the region. Phil – managing director at Teesside will be joining the panel to discuss major development plans and building world class airports.

London City Airport – Tim Halley, Director of Infrastructure and Planning

London City Airport (LCA) have submitted a revised planning application for airport expansion- aiming to bring in 9 million passengers by 2031 and creating hundreds of jobs. LCA have already started the £12 million terminal refurbishment, which includes new restaurants, shopping outlets and revamped amenities for a better customer experience.  Tim will talk about the role London City Airport will play in the aviation sector’s recovery and look ahead to the future development phases of their £500 million airport expansion.

Dublin Airport Central – Lorcan Tyrrell, Head of Commercial Property

Dublin Airport Central is Ireland’s next generation urban quarter, located just 50 yards from Terminal 2 at the Airport. Specifically targeted at international companies who want a European hub office with ease of access to both the EU and US markets, Dublin Airport Central is the ideal location for businesses to start or expand in Europe; the 70 acre site will see 75,000 sq metres of commercial space developed. Lorcan will give and update on the progress of the scheme and give intel on what the next steps are and how to get involved.

Birmingham International Airport – Nikki Bains, Head of Planning, Transport and Strategy

Birmingham Airport announced plans for £500m worth of development to increase passenger numbers from 13 million per year to 18 million by 2033. The expansion will see the departure lounge in the north terminal extended by 40% and is set to add a mezzanine, more check-in facilities, and additional seating and retail space. Nikki will reveal more intel on this expansion as well as discussing the airport’s strategy for recovery and the role the airport plays in Birmingham and the UK’s economy.

Glasgow Airport – Ross Nimmo, Head of Planning & Development

Glasgow Airport is owned by AGS Airports along with Southampton and Aberdeen Airports, carrying over nine million passengers per year, Glasgow Airport serves more Scottish destinations than any other airport and is a key component of Scotland’s transport infrastructure. Ross Nimmo leads Glasgow Airport’s Planning and Development team which is responsible for strategic master planning, transport (including city deal projects) and aerodrome safeguarding. His current portfolio includes developing ‘Airport City Glasgow’ and major public transport enhancements, including the landmark Glasgow Metro which is set to be developed over the next 10 years. The airport is in the midst of a multi-year development and expansion project, which will see a 500,000 sq ft airport city created to support the aerospace, freight and innovation sectors.

Southampton Airport – Steve Thurston, Head of Planning & Development

Southampton Airport has seen some challenging times in recent years but plans are in motion to save the airport through a runway extension which is currently going through the planning process and will be critical to the airport’s future. Mark will speak about the unique challenges Southampton Airport has faced and the learning they have experienced around major airport development in an ever changing world.

AECOM – Bryony Martin, Director and Head of Aviation for Buildings and Places

AECOM is a global provider of technical services to airport owners, investors and aviation clients with a world renowned reputation. Bryony heads up their Aviation for Buildings and Places operation in the UK and will give her perspective on the future of the aviation sector, the future of airport development, the sector’s recovery from the current pandemic, and the challenges and opportunities ahead.

RiverOak Strategic Partners – Tony Freudmann, Director

RSP are set to reopen Manston International Airport to create a new logistics/cargo focused airport which will also become a short haul hub after getting the go-ahead from the Government. RSP will reveal what they’re planning for the site as they look to meet with the construction industry who might be able to help them in their bid to fully reopen by 2023.

Bristol Airport – Simon Earles, Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Director

Bristol Airport previously announced their expansion masterplan which is estimated to bring £430 million to the economy of the Southwest of England and South Wales. As a part of the plan Bristol airport will be focusing on the drive to NetZero, developing greener infrastructure including hydrogen and sustainable growth. Simon will be joining the session to discuss sustainability, infrastructure requirements for airport and economic development.

 

BDB Pitmans – Angus Walker, Partner

Angus Walker specialises in acting for clients on nationally significant infrastructure projects, particularly those consented under the Planning Act 2008, with a leading practice in this field. He worked on the first highway, port and airport project promoted under that Act and often argues for the economic benefits of infrastructure projects with appropriate environmental safeguards.

Transport for Greater Manchester – Nicola Kane, Head of Strategic Planning, Insight and Innovation

With the Five Year Transport Delivery Plan officially adopted by Greater Manchester Combined Authority on 29th January 2021, Nicola joins the conference to tell delegates what it means in the form of delivering regeneration and development across the 10 boroughs. This includes anticipated improvement to green infrastructure, roads, metro and rail links.
