Self Storage Property: Development & Sector Expansion Plans

The self storage industry can often go under the radar compared to other types of industrial property. However there are an estimated 1,900 self storage sites in the UK occupying 49 million sq ft, a number that will only increase with demand outstripping supply.

This webinar will gather industry bodies, operators, investors and developers to examine the state of the industry and its contribution to the UK economy, and explore the potential for continued growth and expansion.

  • Self Storage Association UK – SSA UK represents over 80% of the 1,900 self storage facilities in the country and the association seeks to promote best practice and facilitate the growth of one of the fastest growing alternative asset based industries in the UK. Rennie has extensive knowledge of the self storage industry across the world, from the developing Asian markets through to the birthplace of self storage in the USA and was previously Chief Executive of the Australasian Self Storage Association. He will provide some thought leadership on the state of the industry, the development landscape and how the sector must innovate and change to remain in the strong position is has carried through 2020.
  • Storage King – With 28 locations in prime locations across the UK, Storage King are one of the country’s leading self storage providers. They are actively looking to expand their portfolio through development and the acquisition of existing sites, and added 7 new locations last year. Emma will discuss what makes a successful self storage development, their upcoming projects and the areas they are looking to expand into.
  • Big Yellow – Founded in 1998, Big Yellow have steadily grown to become one of the UKs largest self storage operators with a network of 103 locations nationwide, totalling over 6 million sq ft of storage serving over 71,000 customers. The group had a development pipeline of 13 sites which will add a further 880,000 sq ft of storage space when complete, and in spring 2020 they raised £80 million through a shares issue to fund the acquisition of further development sites. Adrian will discuss their extensive development pipeline, and what they look for when adding space to their portfolio.
  • Safestore – Safestore is the UK’s largest self-storage group with 163 stores, comprising 125 wholly owned stores in the UK, 28 wholly owned stores in the Paris region, 6 stores in the Netherlands and 4 stores in Spain. Three new sites were opened during 2020 and there are plans for at least two more during 2021, with facilities in Birmingham and Paris set to open. Tim will discuss these projects and how their joint venture with The Carlyle Group will allow them to further expand and consolidate their position as Europe’s largest self storage operator.
